The use of sheer fabrics in quilts has similarities to watercolour painting. Both rely on the semi-transparent qualities of the medium to achieve a fascinating variety of colours and tonal values, ranging from delicate tints to deep and complex darks. Make a small quilt using single and multiple layers of lightweight sheer fabrics such as organza, to portray either an abstract or realistic picture, based on images that you bring to class.
Learn how to sew sheers and take advantage of the varying degrees of transparency and the effects of overlapping colours and frayed edges. Enclose elements beneath the sheers, use cutaways and decorative embellishments to further enhance your design.
Stitching is by machine or hand or a combination of both.
